Midlothian District Scouts is looking for a volunteer to lead our District 14-24 Team, supporting the volunteers who run Explorers, Young Leaders and Scout Network across the district.

About the role

The 14-24 Team supports every volunteer in the Explorer, Young Leader and Scout Network Section Teams, helping them plan and deliver great programmes for young people aged 14 to 24. As Team Leader you lead that team. Its members include any 14-24 Team Members and the Section Team Leaders of each Explorer Unit (including the Young Leader Unit), and you are a member of the District Leadership Team alongside the District Lead Volunteer and the other District Team Leaders. Sources: 14-24 Teams and POR 4c.2 District Teams.

What you’ll do

  • Help Explorer, Young Leader and Network sections run smoothly, be welcoming and inclusive, and reflect the make-up of the local area.
  • Make sure young people’s views and ideas shape decisions in the team and its sections.
  • Work with Groups so there are Young Leaders in Squirrel, Beaver, Cub and Scout Section Teams.
  • Brief helpers on safety and safeguarding (including the Yellow Card), promote Our Volunteering Culture and help teams share skills.
  • Make sure safety incidents are reported correctly and safeguarding concerns go straight to the UKHQ Safeguarding Team.
  • Keep processes in order: first aid kits and accident forms, membership records, and enquiries about joining and moving between sections.
  • As a Team Leader, welcome new volunteers and make sure everyone knows their tasks and has the support they need.

What we’re looking for

Scouts doesn’t set a fixed list of qualifications for this role. Its role description points to someone who can lead and support a team of volunteers, champion youth voice and inclusion, and keep safety, safeguarding and records on track. You don’t need to have been a Scout. The role description does not state a time commitment; we can talk through what works for you.

Training and support

All 14-24 Team Members complete the learning everyone needs (Growing Roots, including Safety and Safeguarding), and 14-24 Team Leaders also complete Leading Scout Volunteers. You’ll have support from the District Lead Volunteer and the wider District Team. See 14-24 Teams and the new joiners pack (PDF).

Safeguarding

Scouts expects members of the 14-24 Team to take part in regulated activity. In Scotland that means you must join the PVG scheme, and you can’t start the role until your Scouts PVG disclosure has been viewed and risk assessed by the UKHQ Safeguarding Team, even if you hold a PVG for another organisation. We’ll guide you through it. See Criminal record checks in Scotland.
