Join Scouts in Midlothian

Scouts helps young people aged 4 to 18 have fun, make friends and gain skills for life. Our groups across Midlothian are run by volunteers and welcome everyone. Read about the sections below to see which one suits your child, then find a group near you.

How to join

Midlothian District has eight Scout groups, and not every group runs every section. Our Groups and Units page shows where and when each group meets, with a link to its waiting list.

  • Find a group near you and check it runs the right section for your child’s age.
  • Add your child to that group’s waiting list using its join button.
  • Someone from the group will be in touch when a space becomes available. You don’t need a uniform to start.

Outside Midlothian? You can search for a group anywhere in the UK by postcode on the Scouts website.

Our sections

Each section is for a different age group, and young people move up to the next one as they grow. Jump to: Squirrels · Beavers · Cubs · Scouts · Explorers

Squirrels

Squirrels

Age range: 4 to 6 years

Squirrels is the youngest section and a first taste of Scouts. Children meet in a Drey for an hour each week of games, songs, outdoor play and first badges, building confidence and friendships that help them get ready for school.

Beavers

Beavers

Age range: 6 to 8 years

Beavers meet weekly in a Colony to try new things, make friends and have plenty of fun. Through games, crafts and small adventures they explore the world around them and learn how to help others.

Cubs

Cubs

Age range: 8 to 10½ years

Cubs meet in a Pack and take on activities that stretch them a little further. There are badges for almost every interest, from astronomy to pioneering, plus adventures, camps and chances to make a difference in their community.

Scouts

Scouts

Age range: 10½ to 14 years

Scouts meet in a Troop and are ready for bigger challenges, often outdoors and sometimes muddy. They camp, go on expeditions, learn to lead and work as a team, and are encouraged to have a go even when they feel a few butterflies.

Explorers

Explorers

Age range: 14 to 18 years

Explorers meet in a Unit and have a real say in shaping what they do each week. They can aim for top awards, take on bigger adventures and gain skills employers value, and many volunteer as Young Leaders with younger sections.

Could you volunteer?

Every section is run by trained volunteers, and more adult helpers mean shorter waiting lists. No experience is needed, and even an hour now and then helps. Find out more about volunteering with Scouts, or email info@midlothianscouts.org.uk to chat to us.
