Scout volunteers leading an activity with Cubs

The 14th Midlothian Bonnyrigg Scout Group is looking for volunteers to join our Cub Section Team, helping to run fun, safe weekly meetings for young people in Bonnyrigg.

About the role

The group runs two Cub Packs (8 to 10½ years), meeting on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. We meet at Bonnyrigg Scout Hall, Eldindean Road, Bonnyrigg EH19 2HJ. As a Section Team Member you work alongside the Section Team Leader, other Team Members and Young Leaders. The Section Team plans, delivers and runs quality programmes safely, makes sure all young people can take part and gain skills for life, and helps them work towards their Top Awards. Source: Section Teams on scouts.org.uk.

What you’ll do

  • Work with young people to plan and deliver a great programme, including nights away and adventurous activities, to help them achieve their Top Awards.
  • Help create a safe environment: check the programme can run safely, keep adult:child ratios, and help create and review risk assessments.
  • Share the Yellow Card with parents and carers, brief helpers on safety and safeguarding, and report any safeguarding concerns directly to the UKHQ Safeguarding Team.
  • Help young people and volunteers feel welcome and included, and make activities inclusive and accessible for everyone.
  • Help with admin and communication, such as keeping badge and attendance records up to date, chatting with parents and carers about the programme, and helping young people move between sections.

What we’re looking for

Scouts doesn’t set a fixed list of qualifications for this role. You don’t need to have been a Scout; we’re looking for someone who enjoys working with young people and is happy to be part of a team. The role description does not state a time commitment; we can talk through what works for you.

Training and support

All Section Team Leaders and Team Members complete the learning everyone needs (Growing Roots, including Safety and Safeguarding in your first 30 days), plus Delivering a Great Programme and First Response. You’ll have an induction and support from the rest of the team. See Learning on scouts.org.uk and the new joiners pack (PDF).

Safeguarding

All roles in Scouts in Midlothian require PVG membership. In Scotland that means you must join the PVG scheme, and you can’t start the role until your Scouts PVG disclosure has been viewed and approved by the UKHQ Safeguarding Team, even if you hold a PVG for another organisation. We’ll guide you through it. See Criminal record checks in Scotland.
