The 14th Midlothian Bonnyrigg Scout Group is looking for a volunteer to join our Trustee Board, helping to make sure the group is run safely and legally so our volunteers can keep delivering great Scouting in Bonnyrigg.
About the role
The Trustee Board is a team of volunteers who work together, as charity trustees, to make sure Scouts is run safely and legally. At the heart of the role is a focus on strategy, performance and assurance. The board is made up of the Chair, the Treasurer and Trustees, and the Group Lead Volunteer is automatically a Trustee. All Trustees are equally responsible, though they may split tasks between them. Source: Trustee Boards on scouts.org.uk.
What you’ll do
- Help manage money well, including a budget and a reserves policy, and make sure fundraising takes place if needed.
- Make sure the group follows POR, key Scouts policies (including safety, safeguarding, data protection, and equality, diversity and inclusion) and charity regulations.
- Help produce the Trustees Annual Report and Statement of Accounts, and hold an Annual General Meeting (AGM).
- Look after buildings, insurance and property, including the right insurance for people, buildings and equipment.
- Maintain a risk register and put the right risk mitigations in place.
- Work with the Group Lead Volunteer to meet the group’s charity aims, and champion Our Volunteering Culture.
What we’re looking for
Scouts doesn’t set a fixed list of qualifications for this role, and you don’t need to have been a Scout. Skills in areas such as finance, buildings, organisation or governance can be useful, but you must meet the eligibility requirements to be a charity trustee. The role description does not state a time commitment; we can talk through what works for you.
Training and support
All Trustees complete Being a Trustee in Scouts and the learning everyone needs: Safety, Safeguarding, Data Protection in Scouts, Creating Inclusion, and Who We Are and What We Do. Safety and Safeguarding must be completed in your first 30 days, and the rest should be completed within 180 days. See Learning on scouts.org.uk and the new joiners pack (PDF).
Safeguarding
All roles in Scouts in Midlothian, including Trustee Board roles, require PVG membership. In Scotland that means you must join the PVG scheme, and you can’t start the role until your Scouts PVG disclosure has been viewed and approved by the UKHQ Safeguarding Team, even if you hold a PVG for another organisation. We’ll guide you through it. See Criminal record checks in Scotland.
